The prehistoric discoveries made during the construction of the New Lock in the canal from Ghent to Terneuzen have lingered in my mind for a long time. I could hardly imagine that tens of thousands of years ago, mammoths roamed where the sea dike now stands. These findings sparked my curiosity—what else might be uncovered in the area?
The environment and landscape of that time stand in stark contrast to the digital age we live in today. Just like water that comes and goes, the past has left deep traces in our landscape. That’s why it is so important to assign new meaning to what remains, and to occasionally look at things from a different perspective to gain new insights.
In this piece, made from recycled materials, I take you on a journey back in time. What did life and our surroundings look like back then? What traces are we leaving behind? And how can our traces inspire others to create something new? Imagine what Terneuzen might look like tens of thousands of years from now.
